Everlasting to Everlasting

1

What did the "everlasting to everlasting" God do before the "beginning" mentioned in Genesis 1:1?

  • Myth: God is inexperienced with less than 6000 years of creating with noted major failures of His creation.
  • Myth: This age in God's history is the only age God has been active.
  • Myth: Scripture tells of nothing God has done before this age.
  • Myth: This age in God's plan is only about 5700 years.

Moses understood through the pictorial design of the Tabernacle many deep truths about God's purposeful dimensional division of the Kingdom of Heaven. As Moses pondered the universe that surrounded him he had by God's providence received the best education of his day in Pharaoh's house. No doubt his mother as his nursemaid instilled in him inherited spiritual traditions from generations before him. Added to his basic education was time spent literally conversing with God on multiple occasions. As the sum of his knowledge and experience in a Psalm attributed to His authorship He says the following about the age of God and time relative to man.

Psalms 90:1-4
Lord, Thou hast been our dwelling place in all generations.
2
Before the mountains were born,
Or Thou didst give birth to the earth and the world,
Even from everlasting to everlasting, Thou art God.

3 Thou dost turn man back into dust,
And dost say, "Return, O children of men."
4
For a thousand years in Thy sight
Are like yesterday when it passes by,
Or as a watch in the night.

NASB (Emphasis mine)

Once I asked a fellow Christian what he thought God did before He created man and the world. His answer after a few moments of contemplation was, “I guess He was bored.” While humorously spoken there could be some element of truth to that statement. The billions of people roaming the earth have probably kept God pretty busy since Adam was formed. A search of the Scriptures reveals God was far from bored. He as always was active in a multifaceted past.

Inspired Hints Allude To Everlasting Divine Activity

While not the theme of God’s inspired message to man many references in the Bible such as the Psalm of Moses above hint at ages upon ages of Divine activity before man’s appearance in His plans.  For example when God describes one of His earliest creations He gives the modifying adjective "dawn" or "morning"[1]. These descriptors allude to a creation by God sometime early in His creative acts of eternal past. This creation successfully managed complex responsibilities for some period of history before the creation of man and the world now seen. Sometime later this created being became the most influential contributor ever to influence the present business of God the Father as seen in chapter Who Turned Out the Light?.

Another example is “the Word[2]. God calls His Son “the Word” and shares He too was there “in beginning.” The Word existed in dynamic oneness in the Godhead as Creator of God the Fathers will. Looking at the Divine historical accounts of these two contrasting examples, one can quickly conclude God was very active in many ways before man and the current expanded form of the Kingdom of Heaven was made.

Solomon said that the origin of wisdom existed long before God’s various constructions now seen. This birth of wisdom is said to be God’s first action before everything else of old. Wisdom was from eternity, from the beginning and before the world began.

Proverbs 8:22-31
22 “The LORD brought me forth as the first of his works, before his deeds of old; 23 I was appointed from eternity, from the beginning, before the world began. 24 When there were no oceans, I was given birth, when there were no springs abounding with water; 25 before the mountains were settled in place, before the hills, I was given birth, 26 before he made the earth or its fields or any of the dust of the world. 27 I was there when he set the heavens in place, when he marked out the horizon on the face of the deep, 28 when he established the clouds above and fixed securely the fountains of the deep, 29 when he gave the sea its boundary so the waters would not overstep his command, and when he marked out the foundations of the earth. 30 Then I was the craftsman at his side. I was filled with delight day after day, rejoicing always in his presence, 31 rejoicing in his whole world and delighting in mankind. NIV (Emphasis mine)

The God-Creation-Relationship Requires Everlasting Divine Activity

As one searches for information about God’s past eternal activities before Genesis 1:1 a few principles concerning how God always interacts with His creation must be considered. First, God by His own choice experiences time in His Kingdom work with all His creation. He has a past that He elects to not change -ever! Once an action is committed that becomes unchanged past history the property of time exists. If God could erase and restart His creative acts as if they never happened over and over until they pleased Him His creation would not be able to trust the permanency of any activity in God's creation. God proves over and over His merited trust in His activities within time by telling us His Word will never pass away. Jesus said in Matthew 24:35, "Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words shall not pass away ." NASB Man can trust in the permanency of God's unchanging past actions and future plans over time.

A second principle of the God-Creation relationship is His creation as designed is both dynamic and fluid. By this is meant it undergoes change and transformation both by His choices and the choices of that which is created. For example, Jesus said in Matthew 24:35 "Heaven and earth will pass away...." This heaven and earth currently existing are temporary. Scripture tells us it will not last and great change will come at the end of the age.

God’s Word shares the current heavens and earth are changed from the original form of the past. This idea that the organization of heavens and earth is static without major changes since God started creating is what Peter says is the false idea of the scoffers of the last days of Tribulation. The false conclusion enables the world acceptance of the anti-christ as Messiah.

2 Peter 3:3-7
3 Know this first of all, that in the last days mockers will come with their mocking, following after their own lusts, 4 and saying, "Where is the promise of His coming? For ever since the fathers fell asleep, all continues just as it was from the beginning of creation." 5 For when they maintain this, it escapes their notice that by the word of God the heavens existed long ago and the earth was formed out of water and by water, 6 through which the world at that time was destroyed, being flooded with water. 7 But the present heavens and earth by His word are being reserved for fire, kept for the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men. NASB (Emphasis mine)

Peter shares a religious theological error maintained in last day era thinking that will cause people to reject the doctrine of the promised second coming of the Lord. Remember this second coming doctrine must be arguably rejected so that the world will accept the lie of the "abomination of desolation" whereby the anti-christ claims to be the Messiah. The false deduction is that man’s creation and the beginning of God’s creativeness are at the same relative time in God’s actions. As discussed later in chapter Gathering Together the doctrine of man’s sin will be condemned with those who espouse the sinfulness of man beheaded in intense persecution. Man will be exalted as good and God's creation comprising only of that which is seen here. No previous dimensions or works of God will be believed. Heaven will be here on earth as a state of mind and available through the peaceful philosophy offered by anti-christ in religion, secular life and government.

In truth the Scripture teaches much has changed in God’s kingdom since He started creating long ago. So why are things in God’s Kingdom changed and different from the beginning of God’s creative actions? Just consider how much Satan's choice[3] changed the structure of the Kingdom of Heaven. God the Father is now separated from this dimension of existence. He comes lovingly through His Spirit and Son to redeem that which was lost in Satan's choice. This tragic decision and Divine remedy is further discussed in chapters Who Turned Out the Light? and God’s Blesses With A Loving Plan.

A third principle defining God’s relationship to His creation is that by inspired descriptions He is much more than 5700 years old. He by His nature has been an active creator from "everlasting to everlasting." To say anything else is to put trust in an inexperienced and untested God. He would be a neophyte with some really big major failures of what was created- fall of angels and man.

If by chance God was inactive before the events of this "beginning" mentioned in Genesis 1:1 He then has was not very successful. He created Satan and this failed and created man and that failed. Further one finds the Father in a situation where by what He has created He is isolated and locked out by His own choice of righteousness without fellowship with sin. On the contrary the Father has the experience over time in previous exercise of His power to do as He says. He is "everlasting to everlasting" "before" all that is known.

The Created Testifies To Everlasting Divine Activity

God's "everlasting" experience makes Him deserving of the praise of  His creation. He has proven from "everlasting to everlasting" He keeps His Word and is faithful to do as He says. If God did not have such experience the promises given would be empty and the praise of His creation parroted by design rather than deserving.

Note how in Scripture His creations praise Him.

Revelation 4:8-11

8 And the four living creatures, each one of them having six wings, are full of eyes around and within; and day and night they do not cease to say,

"Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord God, the Almighty, who was and who is and who is to come."

9 And when the living creatures give glory and honor and thanks to Him who sits on the throne, to Him who lives forever and ever, 10 the twenty-four elders will fall down before Him who sits on the throne, and will worship Him who lives forever and ever, and will cast their crowns before the throne, saying,

11 "Worthy art Thou, our Lord and our God, to receive glory and honor and power; for Thou didst create all things, and because of Thy will they existed, and were created." NASB (Emphasis mine)

Throughout the Scriptures records of other creations of God other than man leap out at the reader. More than just allegories these are real beings made by God. Students of the Word are very familiar with Biblical accounts of angels, seraphim, cherubim, and archangels. God’s Word also mentions principalities and powers beyond man's “under the earth” experience. The heavens are full of an innumerable “host of heaven” creation that does God’s will and glorifies Him.

In Revelation above the Apostle John saw “living creatures” and “twenty-four elders.”  By their statements these living creations of God understand the eternal nature of God’s actions and character. With this understanding they bring glory, honor and praise to God.

Another question to ask is do they simply parrot this understanding because God told them or do they bring honor, glory and praise to God based on the heart of their experience with Him? I believe these creatures praise from the heart of experience rather than just being echoes of God given information. For example, I could carry around a tape recording that said, “Dr. Henry is great and to be praised!” over and over. In reality it would really mean nothing. The glory and praise would be empty. Now if by experience others praise me for what God does through me then that praise is fulfilling with satisfaction. God is no different. All His creations praise God from experiential heartfelt knowledge of His eternal character and actions.

God invites man to prove Him for who He is. He never demands empty praise because this would be meaningless. He is “worthy” of the praise because over the ages He is “Holy” as the righteous creator. These other creations know this by their experience and even in a world distant from the Father through Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit His children should know as well. Praise God for the “worthy” creator that He is! In any testing God always proves faithful, just, and holy deserving of praise, honor, and power. God lives forever and ever and He is able by faith in Jesus Christ payment for personal sin to give eternal life.

Man Is An Unreliable Witness To Everlasting Divine Activity

In the recent battle against evolution theory popular Christianity has promoted the concept of New Earth or Young  Creation. In full application of this view God is considered as inactive until almost 6000 years ago. The short era of God’s activity is based on genealogy records of man in God’s inspired Word. Often proponents[4] of this view speak in terms of “Back to the Bible” and the “Genesis record”[5] claiming all other teaching other than theirs is wrong and deny the Bible. Some even now make this short era Creator a test of fellowship in God’s service[6]. This New Creation theory in application has some unaddressed problems due to its myopic time focus. As commonly said it cannot see the forest for the trees when addressing time in relation to the initiation of God’s creative actions and the creation of man.

A common problem with man is an egocentric view in relation to God and His plans for His Kingdom. Man likes the notion of existing as a big fish in a little pond. In the politically correct view all God does is all just about man. While man has had an integral part in God’s plan of redemption of His creation in repair of the division and darkness of evil in His Kingdom there is more to God’s creativeness over the eternal ages of His existence than man.

When I was a second year student in seminary I came a point where I thought there was no question in the Bible I could not answer or solve. After a few Biblical courses of study and principles of  interpretation I thought I knew how to figure it all out. Many ministers go through this phase. The late Reggie White said of his early ministry at seventeen, “if I was witnessing with Billy Graham to another at a table, Brother Graham needed to be quiet and listen to what Reggie had to say.”

Often hindrances exist to properly listening to the Holy Spirit in Scripture interpretation. Sometimes partial information in a self limited and highly controlled paradigm is closely kept in check by other brethren. Also believers often position themselves in self created battles of choice without all the facts and questions. Many times these stands are not in complete alignment in harmony with all Scripture revelation of truth, but only the part liked or in agreement with personal or politically correct opinion.

God says truth comes by comparing spiritual things with spiritual with understanding from the Holy Spirit[7]. This spiritual wisdom Paul tells the Corinthians is also "not of this age, nor of the rulers of this age, who are passing away.[7]" It comes from another age before this one as Paul said, "which God predestined before the ages to our glory." Also God's servants are also encouraged to rightly divide the truth[8] referring to all Scripture fitting squarely as they properly fit truth together with truth. If positions are truth then all[9] relevant knowledge of God’s spiritual action and absolutes must be true for interpretations to be correct and truly of the Spirit of God.

The teaching of God having made only a New Creation does not fit with all Scriptural revelation. It is like a square peg for a round hole. One can force the fit but the match is not complete on all sides of the peg. A young inexperienced God as mentioned above is a problem for those of His creation. If God has been eternally inactive only creating beyond Himself for about 5700 years then one is trusting by faith in an untried and unproven God for eternal life. Again note in this scenario the two major creative acts of creatures recorded in the Bible miserably failed. God created the angels and they in war divided God’s kingdom. Then God created man and man sinned against His will. So what then would make one think God can do what He says for eternity if He has not been successful in only 5700 years of creation?

The Current Creation is a Reliable Witness To Everlasting Divine Activity

Paul told the Roman believers the current creation clearly teaches two important invisible truths about God - "his eternal power and divine nature." These attributes about God cannot be seen directly because they are invisible. One cannot look upon or see God the Father at this time. There is no way to fathom or measure His infinite ways. But clues of His creation express clearly His divine nature and eternal power. His creation gives evidence of His "eternal power."

So what in the creation shows God eternal? The evidence that His creation is old or ancient demonstrates this eternal power. The idea that all creation is just 5700 years old the same age as man does not support eternal power, just power. A quick pop and fizz in awesome demonstration of power does not testify of longevity, dependability, or duration. God does not make His works just appear old to confuse those who study it. It is old because God is "eternal" in the exercise of His power. His creation clearly gives evidence that God is eternal in power.

Romans 1:18-20
18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, 19 because that which is known about God is evident within them; for God made it evident to them. 20 For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse. NASB (Emphasis mine)

Denying an ancient creation by an eternal God is one of the errors leading one to God's disfavor. In Romans Paul outlines the steps taken by those who are destined for the "wrath of God." These exchange this invisible attribute of God to one more like unto man or animals. The logic is that man and animals are short lived so God must be the same.

Romans 1:22-23
22 Professing to be wise, they became fools, 23 and exchanged the glory of the incorruptible God for an image in the form of corruptible man and of birds and four-footed animals and crawling creatures. NASB (Emphasis mine)

The word "incorruptible[10]" means "not decaying." God is not under the bondage of decay as creation is at this time. The King James Version and New International Version properly translated this word "immortal." For ages upon ages from eternity God lives without change or decay in His Being or nature.

It is ironic that Paul proclaims how the creation clearly teaches God is eternal in power. What evidence would support an eternal God? Scientific evaluation of astronomical substitute light created by God on day three put estimates at greater than 15 billion years. Other methods of scientific study often show close to the same. As discussed in chapter In Beginning God created for untold ages before these substitute lights for Himself in the first heaven and the present material creation measured. This vast age far into eternity even beyond the present heavens and earth is such evidence that man cannot deny. Young heavens and earth may teach complexity and power by intelligent design but is not acceptable evidence for eternal power. A young creation would suggest God is yet proven eternal in what He claims and promises. Popular Christianity in its admirable desire to combat godless evolution makes the same logical exchange as those who decide to follow the path of God's wrath - by denying the ancientness of the creation they deny the eternal power of God that is such clear evidence God says those destined for wrath are without excuse (Romans 1:20 above).

God's Proof of Available Life Future Rests In His Everlasting Divine Activity

God is His Word clearly teaches His eternal power in past actions prove His ability to fulfill future promises. In the promise of a Savior Micah spoke of such. Micah said, "His goings forth are from long ago,
From the days of eternity.
" This does not sound like an inactive God until 5700 years ago. His eternal experience made Him trustworthy as the Messiah.

Micah 5:2
2 "But as for you, Bethlehem Ephrathah,
Too little to be among the clans of Judah,
From you One will go forth for Me to be ruler in Israel.
His goings forth are from long ago,
From the days of eternity.
" NASB (Emphasis mine)

Possession of confidence and assurance in God's ability to give eternal life rests in the truth that God is eternal in His past activities and can do what He says. Listen to Habakkuk. It takes more faith to trust for eternal life from a young inexperienced God in creation activity. Can such a God really do as He says? If young it remains to be seen if He can or not. If ancient from everlasting believers have the proof they need to completely trust in Him.

Habakkuk 1:12
12 Art Thou not from everlasting,
O LORD, my God, my Holy One?
We will not die.

Thou, O LORD, hast appointed them to judge;
And Thou, O Rock, hast established them to correct. NASB (Emphasis mine)

Consider the old hymn Leaning on the Everlasting Arms by E. H. Hoffman in the late 1800's. Can one have such comfort in an inactive inexperienced God as expressed in this song? Power may mean safety, ability, and protection but everlasting power brings blessedness, peace, and bright paths without dread or fear. A leaning trust in an everlasting active Creator means He can do as He says.

1. What a fellowship, what a joy divine,
Leaning on the everlasting arms;
What a blessedness, what a peace is mine,
Leaning on the everlasting arms.

2. Oh, how sweet to walk, in this pilgrimway,
Leaning on the everlasting arms,
Oh, how bright the path grows from day to day,
Leaning on the everlasting arms.

3. What have I to dread, what have I to fear,
Leaning on the everlasting arms;
I have blessed peace with my Lord so near,
Leaning on the everlasting arms.

Chorus:
Leaning, leaning,
Safe and secure from all alarms;
Leaning, leaning,
Leaning on the everlasting arms.

Moses reminded the people of Israel the reason for their confidence in God’s ability was His everlasting nature.

Deuteronomy 33:27

27 "The eternal God is a dwelling place,

And underneath are the everlasting arms; NASB

Genesis is not the beginning of God or the first ever of His creative acts in His Kingdom of Heaven. As considered further in In Beginning the record of God's Word to man is the beginning of His loving plan in this age to restore through redemption a divided Kingdom to Himself by procreation with man and sacrifice of His Son Jesus Christ. Many Scriptures lead to the conclusion there have been many ages before this one just as there will be many "ages to come"[11] after this one in which God's children will enjoy through Jesus Christ surpassing riches of God's grace.

End Notes

[1] Isaiah 14:12
2 "How you have fallen from heaven,
O star of the morning, son of the dawn!
You have been cut down to the earth,
You who have weakened the nations! NASB

Satan is not mentioned as part of God's creation in the six days recorded in Genesis.

[2] John 1:1-3
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things came into being by Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being. NASB

[3] The King of Tyre by the inspired description is thought to be a type of Satan.

Ezekiel 28:11-19
11 Again the word of the LORD came to me saying, 12 "Son of man, take up a lamentation over the king of Tyre, and say to him, 'Thus says the Lord GOD,
"You had the seal of perfection, Full of wisdom and perfect in beauty. 13 "You were in Eden, the garden of God; Every precious stone was your covering: The ruby, the topaz, and the diamond; The beryl, the onyx, and the jasper; The lapis lazuli, the turquoise, and the emerald; And the gold, the workmanship of your settings and sockets, Was in you. On the day that you were created They were prepared. 14 "You were the anointed cherub who covers, And I placed you there. You were on the holy mountain of God; You walked in the midst of the stones of fire. 15 "You were blameless in your ways From the day you were created, Until unrighteousness was found in you. 16 "By the abundance of your trade You were internally filled with violence, And you sinned; Therefore I have cast you as profane From the mountain of God. And I have destroyed you, O covering cherub, From the midst of the stones of fire. 17 "Your heart was lifted up because of your beauty; You corrupted your wisdom by reason of your splendor. I cast you to the ground; I put you before kings, That they may see you. 18 "By the multitude of your iniquities, In the unrighteousness of your trade, You profaned your sanctuaries. Therefore I have brought fire from the midst of you; It has consumed you, And I have turned you to ashes on the earth In the eyes of all who see you. 19 "All who know you among the peoples Are appalled at you; You have become terrified, And you will be no more."' "
NASB

[4]Creationism.org is a popular site that teaches Creationism is the only valid explanation for the current order in the Kingdom of Heaven. See http://www.creationism.org/ Again the stand against Godless evolution is admirable but the basic premise misses the truth of the eternal nature of God.

[5] An example of this approach is seen at Answers in Genesis with Ken Ham. May be viewed at http://answersingenesis.org/ Mr. Ham’s stand is admirable but again the basic premise misses the truth of the eternal nature of God.

[6] Morris, John, Is the Big Bang Biblical?, 2003, Master Books, Green Forrest Arkansas, pg 29. Dr. Morris says, "I am still uncertain about young-earth creationism being a requirement for church membership; perhaps it would be proper to give new members time to grow and mature under good teaching. But I do know one thing: Creationism should be a requirement for Christian leadership! No church should sanction a pastor, Sunday school teacher, deacon, elder, or Bible-study leader who knowledgeably and purposefully errs on this critical doctrine."

[7]1 Corinthians 2:6-16
6 Yet we do speak wisdom among those who are mature; a wisdom, however, not of this age, nor of the rulers of this age, who are passing away; 7 but we speak God's wisdom in a mystery, the hidden wisdom, which God predestined before the ages to our glory; 8 the wisdom which none of the rulers of this age has understood; for if they had understood it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory; 9 but just as it is written,

"Things which eye has not seen and ear has not heard,
And which have not entered the heart of man,
All that God has prepared for those who love Him."

10 For to us God revealed them through the Spirit; for the Spirit searches all things, even the depths of God. 11 For who among men knows the thoughts of a man except the spirit of the man, which is in him? Even so the thoughts of God no one knows except the Spirit of God. 12 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might know the things freely given to us by God, 13 which things we also speak, not in words taught by human wisdom, but in those taught by the Spirit, combining spiritual thoughts with spiritual words. 14 But a natural man does not accept the things of the Spirit of God; for they are foolishness to him, and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually appraised. 15 But he who is spiritual appraises all things, yet he himself is appraised by no man. 16 For who has known the mind of the Lord, that he should instruct Him? But we have the mind of Christ. NASB (Emphasis mine)

[8] 2 Timothy 2:15
15 Be diligent to present yourself approved to God as a workman who does not need to be ashamed,
handling accurately the word of truth. NASB (Emphasis mine)

2 Timothy 2:15 - Handling aright orthotomounta (NT:3718). Present active participle of orthotomeoo (NT:3718), a late and rare compound [orthotomos , cutting straight, orthos (NT:3717) and temnoo ), here only in the New Testament. It occurs in Prov 3:6; 11:5 for making straight paths hodous (NT:3598) with which compare Heb 12:13 and "the Way" in Acts 9:2. Theodoret explains it to mean plowing a straight furrow. Parry argues that the metaphor is the stone mason cutting the stones straight since [temnoo] and orthos (NT:3717) are so used. Since Paul was a tent-maker and knew how to cut straight the rough camel-hair cloth, why not let that be the metaphor? Certainly plenty of exegesis is crooked enough (crazy-quilt patterns) to call for careful cutting to set it straight (from Robertson's Word Pictures in the New Testament, Electronic Database. [11] Ephesians 2:1-10
2:1 And you were dead in your trespasses and sins, 2 in which you formerly walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, of the spirit that is now working in the sons of disobedience. 3 Among them we too all formerly lived in the lusts of our flesh, indulging the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, even as the rest. 4 But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, 5 even when we were dead in our transgressions, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), 6 and raised us up with Him, and seated us with Him in the heavenly places, in Christ Jesus, 7 in order that in the ages to come He might show the surpassing riches of His grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. 8 For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; 9 not as a result of works, that no one should boast. 10 For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.
